James Cameron is sitting pretty this weekend after his 3-D epic earned the top spot in the box office’s largest weekend ever, according to The Associated Press.

Though down slightly from last weekend, Avatar drew in $75 million, edging out Sherlock Holmes, which had claimed the No. 1 spot on Christmas. The Guy Ritchie flick came in second with $65.4 million. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel retained its Christmas Day No. 3 slot with $77.4 million in earnings over the weekend.

Along with Christmas Day being the largest in box office history, the entire weekend brought in $278 million, shattering the previous record set in July 2008 when The Dark Knight debuted.
